How to tell if a bag is authentic: a secondhand guide

Chanel Borsa Deauville Pelle Beige usata autentica - Aurea Luxury Lab

Why a Single Check Proves Nothing

The best replicas copy the detail people talk about most. If every guide says "check the code," the replica will have a code. So, when looking at a second-hand bag costing 1,500 euros, the question is not which detail is decisive, but whether all the details are consistent with one another, with the stated model, with the year, and with the wear.

What Is Easy to Copy

Box, dustbag, card, receipt, and even photos of an authentic item can be printed or reused. An original bag may be sold without any of these, while a fake may arrive with the complete set. The documentation says something about the previous owner's care, not about authenticity.

Our Chanel Deauville in beige leather is an example: it comes with the original box and documentation, but the Chanel authenticity card is not included, and we state this in the listing. The absence of the card does not prove that the bag is fake; its presence alone would not be enough to prove the opposite.

The Checks That Matter Most

Stitching

Count the stitches over two or three centimeters in different areas: the spacing should remain consistent along the entire seam. Check the handle attachments and corners, which are areas subject to greater stress where differences in workmanship become visible. If the photo does not allow you to count the stitches, ask for one taken in raking light: irregularities will show immediately. Threads that stop for no apparent reason or visible knots are warning signs, unless the bag has undergone a disclosed repair.

Hardware

Solid metal has weight, sharp engravings, and a uniform color across all pieces. An engraved rather than printed logo, a zipper that slides without catching, and a clasp that snaps precisely are checks you can make in a minute. Also look at the screws and rivets: uniform heads, with no glue residue around the attachments. The most reliable comparison is with a confirmed example of the same model, not with your memory.

Interior and Stamping

Open the bag and look at how it is made inside. The lining, pockets, and stampings such as "Made in Italy" should be centered, sharp, and consistent with the model's known configuration. The Deauville, for example, has a lined interior with one zip pocket and flat pockets: a Deauville with a different interior layout deserves a thorough check.

Consistent Wear

Wear tells a story that must add up. Natural leather parts darken with light and contact with hands; a bag with marked corners but perfectly light handles, or vice versa, has something to explain. The same applies to a "like-new" bag with a strong smell of glue or hardware that is already scratched.

Serial Numbers and Codes: Read Them, Don't Search for Them

A stamped serial number or code is not proof: it is data that must fit with everything else, and counterfeiters have been reproducing them for years. It must be read and compared. On Louis Vuitton bags, the date code, a sequence of letters and numbers stamped inside, must be considered in relation to the model and the canvas: a code indicating a period when that model did not exist is a warning sign. In the guide to the Louis Vuitton date code, we explain how to read it. If you are considering a Speedy, our Speedy 35 in Damier Ébène canvas measures 35 × 23 × 18 cm, a useful reference for identifying an unusual size.

For Chanel, the situation changes over the years: until around 2021, there was a sticker with the serial number; afterward, a microchip, which cannot be read with the naked eye. The details of the two systems are in the guide to recognizing an authentic Chanel bag.

When a Tool Is Needed

With the naked eye, you can rule out the most obvious replicas. For the others, you need a tool. Entrupy compares microscopic images of materials and stitching with a database of authentic items and issues a certificate; it is not a document issued by the brand and does not cover every brand and model. That is why some of our pieces are certified with Entrupy and others with LegitGrails, depending on the brand and model. How the certificate works is explained in the article on what the Entrupy certificate is.

Price Is Data to Interpret

A price far below the market is not a bargain until it has been explained. For the Deauville, our listing reports an average pre-owned market price of 2,500 euros: a Deauville offered at 400 euros is not a bargain, it is an anomaly. The opposite case also exists: a price in line with the market guarantees nothing, because sellers of replicas know the going prices. Price helps you decide how deeply to investigate, not whether to trust.

Five Questions to Ask Before Buying Second-Hand

  • Can you send me close-up photos of the interior stampings, code or serial number, and zipper pull?
  • Who authenticated the bag and with which system? Can the certificate be independently verified, without relying on the seller?
  • Is there proof of purchase or documented provenance, or is it missing?
  • Is a return available if the authentication comes back negative?
  • Is the price in line with the average pre-owned price for the same model and condition? A significant difference should be explained.

A serious seller answers all five without rushing. Anyone who avoids close-up photos or pressures you to decide quickly is already giving you an answer. If you prefer to start with a selection that has already been verified, the Gucci collection is a good starting point for seeing how we describe the condition, measurements, and certification of each piece.
