Chanel is one of the most iconic, desired, and – inevitably – most counterfeited brands in the world.
If you're wondering if your bag is authentic, or want to buy on the pre-owned market without risk, this is the technical guide we use every day at Aurea Luxury Lab to verify the authenticity of Chanel bags.
Here are the 5 concrete steps to check.
Step 1 – Check the Serial Number
Until 2021, every authentic Chanel bag features a 7 or 8-digit serial number .
It is applied to an internal sticker protected by transparent film and accompanied by an Authentication Card with the same number.
What to check:
-
The font must be thin and precise
-
The number must not be smudged or poorly printed
-
The sticker must have the Chanel logo engraved in micro-print
-
The card must be of the correct thickness (not lightweight plastic)
Please note: as of 2021, Chanel has eliminated the adhesive serial number and introduced the microchip.
Step 2 – Microchip (models from 2021 onwards)
The most recent Chanels no longer have the classic serial number sticker.
In its place is an invisible internal microchip , readable only by professional tools.
It is not possible to verify it "by eye".
If a bag declared 2022–2023 still has the old serial number sticker, it is a warning sign.
In these cases, authentication requires human verification by an expert; certified tools like Entrupy or advanced AI technical verification are not enough.
Step 3 – Analyze the Construction
An authentic Chanel has impeccable construction.
Check:
Perfectly aligned quilting
Regular seams with a uniform number of stitches
No wire out of place
Clean and symmetrical corners
In the Classic Flap, the quilting lines must match perfectly between the flap and the body of the bag.
In fakes, the quilting often doesn't match when the bag is closed.
Step 4 – Observe the Logo and Internal Font
The “CHANEL Made in France” or “Made in Italy” stamp must be:
-
Centered
-
With thin, perfectly spaced letters
-
Printed cleanly and sharply
The external CC logo (closure):
-
The right C should overlap the left one at the top
-
The left C should overlap the right one at the bottom
The symmetry is millimetric.
Fakes often get this very detail wrong.
Step 5 – Hardware and Weight
Authentic Chanels have solid metal components.
Verify:
-
Heavy weight (not light)
-
Precise engravings, never superficially printed
-
Uniform color (gold, light gold, ruthenium, silver)
-
Well finished screws
Zippers must slide smoothly and silently.
Hardware that is too light or shiny is often a sign of replication.
Conclusion: one detail is not enough
A fake Chanel can imitate a single element.
But he can't reply:
-
Construction
-
Alignments
-
Font
-
Serial / microchip coherence
At Aurea Luxury Lab, each item is verified internally and, when necessary, authenticated through independent professional systems.
Our certificate of authenticity is not a document issued by the brand, but it protects the customer over time and guarantees a thorough technical verification.

In the second-hand market the real risk is not the price.
It is the error of authenticity.
