How to recognize an original Chanel bag: serial number, microchip, and details that make the difference

Come riconoscere una borsa Chanel originale: seriale, microchip e dettagli che fanno la differenza

Chanel is one of the most iconic, desired, and – inevitably – most counterfeited brands in the world.

If you are wondering whether your bag is authentic, or want to buy on the pre-owned market without risks, this is the technical guide we use every day at Aurea Luxury Lab to verify the authenticity of Chanel bags.

Here are the 5 concrete steps to check.

Step 1 – Check the Serial Number

Until 2021, every authentic Chanel bag has a serial number composed of 7 or 8 digits.

It is applied on an internal sticker protected by a transparent film and accompanied by a Authentication Card with the same number.

What to check:

  • The font must be thin and precise

  • The number must not be smudged or poorly printed

  • The sticker must have the Chanel logo engraved in micro-print

  • The card must have the correct thickness (not light plastic)

Attention: since 2021, Chanel has eliminated the serial sticker and introduced the microchip.

Step 2 – Microchip (models from 2021 onwards)

The most recent Chanel bags no longer have the classic serial sticker.

Instead, there is an invisible internal microchip, readable only with professional tools.

It cannot be verified "by eye."

If a bag declared 2022–2023 still has the old serial sticker, it is a warning sign.

In these cases, authentication requires human expert inspection; certified tools like Entrupy or advanced AI technical verification are not enough.

Step 3 – Analyze the Construction

An authentic Chanel has impeccable construction.

Check:

Perfectly aligned quilting

Regular stitching with uniform stitch count

No loose threads

Sharp and symmetrical corners

In Classic Flap bags, the quilting lines must perfectly align between the flap and the body of the bag.

In fakes, the quilting often does not match when the bag is closed.

Step 4 – Observe the Logo and Internal Font

The stamp “CHANEL Made in France” or “Made in Italy” must be:

  • Centered

  • With thin and perfectly spaced letters

  • Cleanly and sharply printed

The external CC logo (closure):

  • The right C must overlap the left one at the top

  • The left C must overlap the right one at the bottom

The symmetry is millimetric.

Fakes often get this detail wrong.

Step 5 – Hardware and Weight

Authentic Chanels have solid metal components.

Check:

  • Significant weight (not light)

  • Precise engravings, never superficially stamped

  • Uniform color (gold, light gold, ruthenium, silver)

  • Well-finished screws

Zippers must glide smoothly and silently.

Hardware that is too light or shiny is often a sign of a replica.

Conclusion: one detail is not enough

A fake Chanel can imitate a single element.

But it cannot replicate:

  • Construction

  • Alignments

  • Font

  • Serial consistency / microchip

At Aurea Luxury Lab, every item is checked internally and, when necessary, authenticated through independent professional systems.

Our certificate of authenticity is not a document issued by the brand, but it protects the customer over time and guarantees a thorough technical verification.
