Chanel is one of the world’s most iconic and sought-after brands - and inevitably one of the most counterfeited.
If you’re wondering whether your bag is authentic, or want to shop the pre-owned market without risk, this is the technical guide we use every day at Aurea Luxury Lab to verify the authenticity of Chanel bags.
Here are 5 specific steps to check.
Step 1 – Check the Serial Number
Until 2021, every authentic Chanel bag had a serial number consisting of 7 or 8 digits.
It is applied to a protected internal sticker covered by a transparent film and accompanied by an Authentication Card with the same number.
What to check:
-
The font must be thin and precise
-
The number must not be smudged or poorly printed
-
The sticker must have the Chanel logo engraved in microprint
-
The card must have the correct thickness (not lightweight plastic)
Please note: in 2021, Chanel eliminated the serial number sticker and introduced the microchip.
Step 2 – Microchip (models from 2021 onward)
More recent Chanel bags no longer have the classic serial number sticker.
Instead, there is an invisible internal microchip, readable only with professional tools.
It cannot be verified “by eye.”
If a bag described as a 2022–2023 model still has the old serial sticker, that’s a red flag.
In these cases, authentication requires a manual inspection by an expert; certified tools such as Entrupy or advanced AI technical verification are not enough.
Step 3 – Analyze the Construction
An authentic Chanel has impeccable construction.
Check:
Perfectly aligned quilting
Even stitching with a consistent stitch count
No loose threads
Sharp, symmetrical corners
On Classic Flap bags, the quilting lines must align perfectly between the flap and the body of the bag.
On fakes, the quilting often doesn’t line up when the bag is closed.
Step 4 – Examine the Logo and Interior Font
The “CHANEL Made in France” or “Made in Italy” stamp must be:
-
Centered
-
With thin, perfectly spaced letters
-
Cleanly and sharply stamped
The external CC logo (clasp):
-
The right C must overlap the left one at the top
-
The left C must overlap the right one at the bottom
The symmetry is millimetric.
Fakes often get this detail wrong.
Step 5 – Hardware and Weight
Authentic Chanel bags have solid metal components.
Check:
-
Substantial weight (not lightweight)
-
Precise engravings, never superficially stamped
-
Uniform color (gold, light gold, ruthenium, silver)
-
Well-finished screws
Zippers should glide smoothly and quietly.
Hardware that is too light or shiny is often a sign of a replica.
Conclusion: one detail isn’t enough
A fake Chanel can imitate a single feature.
But it can’t replicate:
-
Construction
-
Alignment
-
Font
-
Serial number / microchip consistency
At Aurea Luxury Lab, every item is inspected in-house and, when necessary, authenticated using independent professional systems.
Our certificate of authenticity is not a document issued by the brand, but it protects the customer over time and guarantees a thorough technical inspection.

In the second-hand market, the real risk isn’t the price.
It’s the authenticity mistake.
