Authentic or fake Pochette Métis: a guide to identifying it

Imitations of the Pochette Métis almost always reproduce the Monogram canvas well, but they almost always get the proportions of the structure, the weight of the closure, or the alignment of the print on the side seams wrong. These details, not the logo, are what distinguish an original Pochette Métis from a well-made copy. Here are the points to check before buying one pre-owned.

Measurements and structure

The Pochette Métis measures 25 × 19 × 7 cm. This is not a minor detail: the bag has an internal reinforcement that allows it to retain its trapezoidal shape even when empty, whereas many imitations use a softer structure that collapses when not filled. If the base gives way or the sides fold inward, that is already an initial warning sign.

The canvas: Monogram, Reverse, Damier and Empreinte

Over the years Louis Vuitton has offered the Métis in several versions: classic Monogram canvas (dark brown background, leather-colored monogram), Monogram Reverse (light caramel background, dark-toned pattern—the inverted variant, rarer on the pre-owned market), Damier Ébène checkerboard canvas, and some releases in textured Empreinte leather.

Print alignment

On an original piece, the canvas pattern is centered and symmetrical in relation to the side seam: when looking at the bag in profile, the design aligns on both sides of the seam. On the most common imitations, the print is cut without this alignment, or it repeats at a different interval from one side to the other.

The Reverse variant: light background, dark pattern

In Monogram Reverse canvas, the tones are inverted compared with classic Monogram: the background is caramel-colored, while the monogram pattern is a darker tone. This combination was produced in smaller quantities than traditional Monogram and is now less common to find on the pre-owned market, which also makes it more susceptible to being copied when it appears online at a suspiciously low price.

The hardware and S-lock closure

The closure is a gold-tone turn lock (S-lock) that secures the central flap. It should feel solid and substantial, not light or hollow, and the brand engravings should be sharp and raised, never printed or blurred. The same applies to the strap loops and D-rings: the original plating is uniform, with no dull areas or points where the base metal emerges after limited use.

The adjustable strap and top handle

The Métis can be carried in three ways: on the shoulder or crossbody with the adjustable strap, or by hand using only the top handle, which is sewn directly onto the body of the bag. The strap is removable via two lobster clasps and adjustable through multiple holes: on original examples, the holes are finished with metal eyelets, and the surrounding leather does not fray even after years of adjustments. The code is heat-stamped on one of the internal vachetta labels, near a seam.
